How to repair bamboo blinds

Bamboo blinds, while great, can give you problems when they are broken. For things as common as blinds where you are using them everyday, the problems you are experiencing can become a major source of annoyance. To relieve this problem, I have put together a small guide how to repair bamboo blinds when they are not working. It is as easy step by step guide and I will try to be as clear as I can when giving out the instructions.

Before starting the repair, you will need to know when the problem is. It could be the blind’s cord, slats or the strings. What you need to do is to know exactly where the problems are. For different types of blinds, the problems might be a bit different. A bamboo roman blind, for example, might have problems with its strings. A bamboo roll blind, on the other hand, might have issues with the rollers.

Most of the problems I have seen concerns the bamboo slats, lift cords or the string ladder. These will be the focus on my guide. As a first step, you will need to first lower the blinds and tilt the cord until the blinds are open. Next, you will then need to remove them from the brackets. You will probably need a ladder. Once removed, place the bamboo blinds straight on a table top.

The next step is to expose the clips/knots that are holding the ends of the lift cord and the string ladders together. These knot are mostly hidden from sight so you will need to remove their caps to see them. Once you can see the knots and the string ladders, you can remove the parts that you want to be change.  The next few steps will vary according to the parts you are replacing.

Once the cords are removed, you need to pull both lift cords up through the slats until you reach the damaged slat that you want to replace. Simply remove the broken bamboo slats and put in the new ones. Pull the cords back down and secure them back to the bottom rail with the end caps.

How to repair broken lift caps of bamboo blinds
If you are replacing the lift-cord of the bamboo blinds, you will need to pull both ends of the lift cord up into the head box, over the pulleys, down and out. Most people will not know how to put it back so please sketch down a diagram for your own reference before removing the lift cords. Once the damaged lift cords are removed, you can put the two ends of the new lift cord back into the head box and over the first pulley. After which, you will need to pull one lift cord over the second pulley and the other one over the head box to the far pulley.  Once in placed, you can slowly thread the life cords down through the slats to the bottom rail and secure them with the end caps.

If you are replacing the string ladder, you must take the lift cords out of the bamboo blinds as described above. The next step is to disconnect the ladders from the tilt tube in the head box and remove them from the sides of the slats. Then you will have to take the bamboo blats and put them into the new ladder and then attach the ladders to the tilt tube and bottom rail. Once that is done, you will need to thread the lift cords back through the slats, and secure them with the cap ends.
